Mr. Alan Benson Johnston, 2019 Judge for USLTC National Specialty.

My Kennel, the Oregill Kennel, was started by my Grandad, Alf Johnston in 1921. It is currently the oldest Kennel/prefix in the world for Lakeland terriers still held within the same family. I took over, well, I was given a bitch puppy in 1962 shortly after my grandad died, I was around 13 at the time. This pup (We named her Oregill Heritage) was not a great one, but she was a start and all my dogs today will go back to her. I suppose my Mentor was Len Farran (Crakesdale) he showed me the ropes but it was a few years until I got in the ring. I made up my first Owner bred and handled champion Lakeland (Ch. Oregill Happy Girl) in 1981. She was just preceded by Ch Oregill Hijack in 1980 owned by Herbert Atkinson (Wyndham). My Latest Champion Ch. Oregill Hot Topic was made up at Crufts this year.

I was very lucky to live in West Cumbria when Herbert, had in my opinion, the very best Lakelands and I used his dogs extensively in my breeding programme, Ch Tarnbreck Comet being a particular favourite and very influential Stud dog in the breed as a whole.

I first awarded CC’s in Lakelands in 1987 and have awarded CC’s at most of the UK Championship shows (including Crufts and National Terrier) where CC’s have been available for the breed, I have judged all 3 UK Lakeland Terrier Clubs (Some more than once) it was a particular honour to be chosen to judge The Lakeland Terrier Club special 75 anniversary show in 2007. A very memorable weekend for anyone involved in Lakelands, with a bumper entry to judge and lakie events held all weekend.

I don’t campaign my dogs at as many shows as I used to, but we have some good youngsters to come out and an Open dog who we would like to finish.

I look forward to Montgomery weekend and judging your Lakelands I am truly honoured at being chosen to judge my breed at the greatest terrier show in the world.
